3 INFAMOUS MARBLE SCULPTURES

TEST YOUR MARBLE KNOWLEDGE THROUGHOUT ART HISTORY

In Greece’s Classical Period, which ran from 500 BCE to 323 BCE, the popularity of marble sculpture rose. With an interest in naturalistic representation, Classical Greek artists began to sculpt human figures and reliefs with refined chiseling techniques. The subject of the sculptures focused on an idealized perception of anatomy and featured clinging fabrics and drapery.

In Rome, artists were known for creating busts and marble copies of Greek bronze sculptures. Marble was and still is, a preferred stone to carve with because of the fine grain, tough weather resistance, and smooth, waxy appearance.

PIETA (1497-99), CREATED BY MICHELANGELO

This renaissance sculpture depicts the body of Jesus held by his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. The emotion of mourning is strong in this sculpture.  Elements the artist used to create this feeling are based on classical beauty and naturalism, and the intricate flowing dress adorned by Mary makes the marble appear soft, subdued, and lifelike.

MOSES (1513-15), CREATED BY MICHELANGELO

This mighty sculpture features the famous Biblical subject sitting in an active position and was commissioned by Pope Julius II for his tomb. Moses holds stone tablets that contain the Ten Commandments from God. The details within the marble feature veins and tendons along the arms and legs, a long and curly flowing beard, and a face full of emotions. The marble allows for a strong aura of the large and important man.

This life-sized sculpture tells the narrative of an ancient Greek myth, in which the river nymph Daphne is pursued relentlessly by the sun god Apollo until she is transformed into a Laurel tree to save herself. The artist depicts the climax of transformation, as Daphne sprouts leaves from her body. The fine detail in the hair and foliage, along with the smooth skin transforms the hard marble into incredible lifelike qualities.

Marble is an amazing stone and can be crafted into many different things. While you might not have the opportunity to display a famous statue in your home, putting marble countertops in your kitchen or bathroom may be the next best thing. Contact us today to find out more about pricing, custom projects, and specialty finishes.
