What is crystallization?
Crystallization is a method of creating a gloss on marble, limestone, or travertine. It Is a practice that has been used since the 1960s and is a process that polishes natural stone. In science, crystallization is the process by which solid forms as the atoms or molecules are highly organized into a crystal structure.
Recrystallization, also known as fractional crystallization, is a procedure that purifies an impure compound in a solvent. As the temperature increases, the amount of solute that can be dissolved in a solvent increases.
In simple terms…
Recrystallization is simply the name for the crystals often formed when the compound precipitates out. It can also refer to the natural growth of larger ice crystals at the expense of smaller ones. Crystallization is a process that gives a polished finish to marble and other natural stone. Today, we will mostly be focusing on crystallization.
How does it work?
Crystallization occurs in two major steps. The first is the appearance of the crystalline phase from either a supercooled liquid or supersaturated solvent. This is called nucleation. The second step is crystal growth, which increases with the size of particles and leads to a crystal state. An important feature of this step is that loose particles form layers at the crystal’s surface and lodge themselves in pores and cracks.
Most minerals and organic molecules crystallize easily. However, larger biochemical particles are often difficult to crystallize, as the crystallization process depends on the intensity of the forces.
Crystallization in nature
There are many examples of natural processes that involve crystallization. Natural mineral crystal formation occurs to create gemstones and crystals, snowflakes crystalize into unique forms, and nearly all types of honey crystallize.
At Cochise Marble, we offer signature stones, as the testing data of our marble shows that it contains 99.9% calcium carbonate, with no weakness in the veins. This is a very rare feat among other marbles similar in pattern. In fact, we have it all, no matter the crystallization. Cochise Marble has the highest-quality and purity of stones available in a wide range of colors and finishes. Learn more about who we are on our website.
